Nichols Quilted Maple Guitar
Back in 2001, I was in a music store and saw a solid bodied bass that had some of the prettiest wood in it I had ever seen. This inspired me to build this quilted maple guitar. I found a source in Washington state and ordered enough to make the back and sides.
Here is the back prior to finishing. I called Old Standard Wood in Missouri and told them to send me the best piece of red spruce they had for the top.
Here is the guitar without any finish on it.
After the body was completed, I called the supplier in Washington and ordered another billet of the quilted maple for the neck. (A $250.00 piece of wood)
I braced this guitar with pretty standard Martin style bracing. It worked out to be the prettiest guitar I have.
This guitar shows God’s handiwork. A man could not produce this beautiful grain.
The peghead. The truss rod cover was made from a CD. Also the rosette was made from a CD.
It also has a good sound. Contrary to popular belief, maple can produce a good sounding guitar body.
I told my Granddaughter a few years ago that I’d give her this guitar if she learned to play. She has learned to play and is doing very well with her picking and singing. She now owns this guitar. I saw a video of Alan Jackson and he was playing a similar looking quilted maple guitar. I hope my Granddaughter, Taylor Nichols, enjoys this guitar. I enjoy watching her play it.
